The University of Pittsburgh Press seeks a creative and innovative individual for the position of Marketing & Sales Director.  We are looking for someone with a profound enthusiasm for the world of books and ideas, and the ability to convey that energy to others. We want a spirited advocate of great marketing ideas and a hard-working collaborator who can help to take the Press to the next level of achievement.

The Marketing & Sales Director is a member of the Press senior management team and reports to the Director of the Press. You will work to enhance the promotion and sales of Press books; make regular visits to major book sellers and review media to promote our seasonal lists; inspire, mentor, and lead marketing staff; manage commissioned sales reps and set sales policies; collaborate with other senior managers to develop Press strategic goals; provide marketing feedback on potential MS acquisitions; coordinate the collaborative creation of jacket designs and catalogue copy; and implement your marketing, advertising, and promotional plans. You will also possess superb communication skills and be attuned to what is needed to unlock the potential of our books, authors, and staff.

The University of Pittsburgh Press is a scholarly publisher with distinguished lists in a wide range of academic subjects and in poetry. The Press was established in 1936 and is currently expanding output from 50 to 75 books per year. Our books are for general readers, scholars, and students, and feature the prize-winning work of many prominent scholars in the social sciences and humanities. The Press also publishes the renowned Pitt Poetry Series, home to many of America’s greatest poets, and sponsors the annual Drue Heinz Literature Prize for short fiction.  We have a talented professional staff and a collaborative work atmosphere with a minimum of hierarchy that fosters both teamwork and individual creativity.

A minimum of five to ten years of experience in book publishing is desirable, along with project and staff management skills and professional expertise in every aspect of book marketing. Bachelor’s degree required.
