Job Title:         Senior Production Editor

Department:   Naval Institute Press

Reports To:     Managing Editor

SUMMARY

Oversees the production of 35-45 new books per year, from edited manuscript to final proofs; handles the production of half the new books and processes reprints and paperback editions. Handles our most important books. Assists managing editor with other tasks as directed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Update and maintain publication list and distribute to Press staff every other week. Coordinate with marketing and editorial to receive accurate information for pub list.
  • Serve as primary contact for authors throughout the production process
  • Prepare manuscripts for the production process
  • Verify that electronic files are properly coded and formatted for designers
  • Review permission status of art and any extensively quoted material
  • Label art and organize all manuscript elements
  • Assess quality of freelancers’ copyediting and provide feedback to managing editor
  • Work closely with production editor in tracking projects’ progress through copyediting and production editing
  • Oversee the review and correction of page proofs
  • Prepare master set of page proofs by collating author and proofreader corrections; oversee preparation of master proofs by production editor as needed.
  • Schedule freelance proofreaders, evaluate their work, and offer feedback
  • Hire freelance indexers; explain press’ criteria for index format and electronic file preparation
  • Evaluate author and proofreader corrections to determine if they are editorially and   economically feasible
  • Check revised pages, bluelines, and all subsequent stages of proof
  • Copyedit index manuscript, catalog, and jacket copy
  • Inspect sample pages and jacket proposals and provide editorial input
  • Process reprints and paperback editions.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversees production editor; acts as managing editor in the managing editor’s absence.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Firm knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition
  • Command of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, and Editor’s Toolkit
  • Demonstrated editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to negotiate and keep NIP editorial costs at an acceptable rate.
  • Familiarity with the Windows operating system and proficiency in Microsoft Word
  • High level of organization and ability to work efficiently under deadline pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in English or related field. At least five years’ in-house book or production editing experience required, preferably with a university or scholarly press.
