The Kent State University Press seeks a full-time Assistant Editor to provide editorial and administrative support to the manuscript editorial and acquisitions editorial functions of the Press.

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

  • Perform editorial functions, including cleaning up edited manuscripts and proofreading pages, editing indexes, numbering and placing artwork.
  • Clean up and code manuscripts on disk in preparation for electronic copyediting and production.
  • Maintain an up-to-date list of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers; gather resumes of qualified prospective freelancers and send out editorial tests.
  • Correspond with present and future book and journal authors and freelancers via letter or e-mail.
  • Write or edit descriptions of the manuscripts for editorial and marketing departments.
  • Submit required material for cataloging of title with the Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication program.
  • Submit information and deposit copies for copyright registrations with the U.S. Register of Copyrights.
  • Assist in compilation of information for data feeds to major customers and databases.
  • Send complimentary copies of books, fulfill permission agreements and return manuscript materials and art to authors.
  • Perform a variety of office functions, including photocopying, mailing, filing, and tracking manuscripts in production.

The ideal candidate will have a firm grasp of grammar and composition, as well as copyediting and proofreading skills, and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, working independently with a high level of responsibility.

A bachelor’s degree in a humanities or related field, plus at least one year of relevant experience, is required.
