Description

The Kent State University Press seeks a Marketing and Sales Manager, reporting to the Director of the Press, who will be responsible for formulating, implementing and executing all marketing and sales activities of the Press.

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

  • Develop, communicate and implement strategic marketing and sales plans to meet department publishing objectives related to all backlist, current, and forthcoming Press titles.
  • Develop, review, and approve promotional materials and activities.
  • Work closely with the Director and acquisitions staff to determine sales potential for prospective titles and series.
  • Develop and manage marketing budget; forecast and track annual marketing and sales expenses.
  • Manage the relationship and activities of warehousing and distribution vendors in consultation with the Director.
  • Manage domestic and international commissioned sales representatives.
  • Monitor inventory of in-print titles; initiate reprints, including recommending titles for print-on-demand; manage reprint sales and end-of-life title processes.
  • Regularly review backorder, inventory, and other reports to identify action items.
  • Oversee the development, production, and distribution of seasonal sales catalogs, flyers, brochures, exhibit materials, and other promotional items, in both print and electronic formats.
  • Oversee the compilation and dissemination of title information through ONIX data feeds or other metadata distribution methods. Monitor and direct adjustments to information as necessary in a timely fashion.
  • Plan marketing campaigns surrounding workshops, conferences, and special events; travel to off-campus academic conferences, trade shows, promotional and sales events
  • Design, conduct, and analyze market research activities; identify specific markets and target applicable audiences
  • Serve on department, division, and University committees; participate in various professional, civic, community, or University organizations to further enhance visibility and marketing efforts.
  • Provide functional guidance to unclassified employee(s) and direct supervision to student employees/interns.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with scholarly and nonfiction trade publishing conventions and practices, and higher education and university structures, functions and issues. The position requires strong skills in written, verbal and interpersonal communications; developing marketing plans; analyzing market potential; and developing sales forecasts. The Marketing and Sales Manager must think strategically about the evolving role of scholarly publishing, including exploring new revenue streams and models; manage multiple projects and activities simultaneously; and provide leadership and direction.

A bachelor's degree in English, history, marketing, communications or relevant field is required, together with five years of experience in publishing sales/marketing and management.
