Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Production Editor (Edit/Media Specialist II Content/Writing) for Rutgers University Press.

This position is responsible for production editing and production coordination for about one-third of the front list and may also include reprints, and / or specialty projects. Incumbent manages projects from the point of turnover from the acquisition department, through manufacturing, ending when books are delivered to the warehouse.

Supervises front-list manuscript editorial and production stages on selected books: arranges for book packaging and/or copyediting, coding, indexing, design, typesetting, production of ePubs, and printing of books and jackets. Checks and evaluates quality of work at all stages; Maintains title P&L, tracks costs, cost estimating; maintains budgets and schedules. Manages title record data entry for assigned fields and schedule in Firebrand database. Responsible for compliance with University procurement policies.

• Assesses the costs of freelance editing, indexing, and proofreading

• Assesses the costs of cover design, typesetting, image editing, and printing

• Updates and maintains standard schedules in the Press-wide database to reflect current status of projects
• Attends department meetings and staff meetings to communicate progress on all current projects, and offers consultation on key production decisions daily
• Assigns packager or freelancer for new book projects, assesses and communicates the individual needs of titles to vendors
• Communicates clear expectations and deadlines to packagers/authors/freelancers
• Enters accurate information into databases, sets budgets, obtains estimates, opens purchase orders and keeps track of bills
• Juggles competing projects and sets priorities to meet multiple deadlines

• responsible for compliance with University procurement policies.

• Researches new production technologies, weighs costs and benefits, and makes recommendations to management team

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• B.A. required.

• Minimum of two years’ experience in publishing, especially in copyediting, proofreading, project management, design, and typesetting.

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary for the position, and the ability to meet deadlines and handle stress. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability communicate clearly and courteously in writing, over the telephone, and in person, are essential

• Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, Word essential, but also Excel and Outlook. Must be comfortable with evolving technology in a publishing environment.

• Thorough knowledge of scholarly style manuals—Chicago Manual of Style, APA, MLA, and/or scientific style manuals like CBE and AMA.

• Knowledge of electronic manuscript preparation and editing

• Fluent with comment and markup in Adobe Acrobat

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, strongly preferred. 

• Academic work beyond the B.A., especially in fields in which the Press publishes.

• Interest in cross-training, flexibility with changing job responsibilities as technology changes.

• Familiarity with academic styles and discourse, especially in the disciplines in which RUP publishes.
