Publicity & Promotions Assistant


General Description:

Under the supervision of the Publicity and Communications Manager, the Publicity & Promotions Assistant provides high-level support to execute print and digital promotion of new and backlist titles for the University of Texas Press. This is an entry-level position for someone looking to start or continue their early-career in publishing.

 We’re looking for a highly organized and creative applicant who loves books and media, who can establish priorities among multiple projects, meet concurrent deadlines, work effectively both individually and in a team environment, and maintain records that enable the marketing department to evaluate the success of various campaigns.

A key member of the UTP Marketing and Communications team, the Publicity & Promotions Assistant will:


  • Support workflow and project development for the Publicity and Marketing team as a whole and for individual publicity campaigns as needed.
  • Serve as the Marketing Department’s first point of contact for UTP authors and their forthcoming books.
  • Assist the Publicity and Communications Manager and authors with development of marketing materials, including press kits and promotional graphics, and help coordinate authors’ involvement in the publicity and marketing process.
  • Assist the Publicity and Communications Manager with planning publicity and executing campaigns for all titles: help write press releases, identify appropriate media and reviewers, assemble media lists, organize mailings, clear image permissions for media use, supply images to illustrate reviews, and conduct follow-up as necessary.
  • Coordinate and send information and materials about UTP books to media, the community, and other important partners and contacts.
  • Organize author events as required. Attend and/or assist at events and exhibits as needed.
  • Oversee collection and logging of reviews and media notices, assemble and distribute a monthly review packet for authors, and draft periodic bulletins for staff as well as sales and distribution partners.
  • Assist with digital marketing and direct promotion as needed.


Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Samples may be requested at the time of interview.
  • Computer proficiency with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. Ability to quickly master and work within in-house and industry databases such as Cision and Filemaker. Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud or Creative Suite apps preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with social media and various platforms. Ability and desire to learn new technology.
  • Knowledge of literary and book review media; knowledge of academic disciplines, or a willingness to learn.
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic, with demonstrated professionalism and integrity. Demonstrated interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently as well as in a team. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.


Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree required; at least six months’ experience as an intern, fellow, or employee in the publishing industry, preferably in marketing; or equivalent experience in marketing communications; or a graduate of a postgraduate professional-level publishing course.
