Finance and Business Manager


McGill-Queen’s University Press is today one of North America’s leading and most respected and forward-looking scholarly presses, publishing between 120-150 titles per year and on track within two years to originate a minimum of 160-170 titles, including monographs, trade, and course adoption titles. With a presence in Montreal, Kingston, Toronto, and the UK, MQUP is a separate not-for-profit corporation from its parent universities (McGill and Queen’s) and supports their research and dissemination missions by publishing Canadian and international authors for a global community of scholars, students, and educated readers.

The Finance and Business Manager develops and monitors the Press’s financial and administrative processes, including Trilogy, the Press-wide database, to ensure efficient flow of information between Press departments and to outside distributors and business partners.  A member of the senior management team, this position reports to the Executive Director and prepares and monitors annual and multi-year Press budgets. S/he creates and maintains systems that interface with internal McGill University accounting systems to provide sales and financial reporting, including full financial statements for independent audit, payment of royalties, as well as corporate and tax reporting. In addition, this position is responsible for data and financial information regarding major grant applications, such as Canada Book Fund, Canada Council, and Foundations and ensures timely application and financial reporting. This position supervises a four-person administrative team, as well as oversees recruitment and staffing of the Press. The position would be based in Montreal, one of North America’s most livable, affordable, and culturally rich cities.


  • Prepare annual budgets and multi-year business plans in consultation with and for approval by the Executive Director.
  • Manage the accounting activities of the Press; prepare quarterly financial statements and reports; prepare annual financial statement for external audit.
  • Manage the administrative activities of the Press including but not limited to: human resources (recruitment, staffing, payroll); grant applications and subsequent reporting; fulfillment of Press contractual obligations (royalties, distributed publishers); corporate reporting, GST/QST; legal deposit; statistical reporting (Stats Can; AUP, etc.,); and oversee accounts receivable for sales and subsidies.
  • Manage the contracts for print and electronic distribution service provided by companies in Canada, US, UK, and elsewhere and implement new business initiatives from time to time such as the acquisition of another agency, or publisher, and the sale of digital products.
  • Oversee the operation of press-wide title management system.
  • Process and analyze monthly downloads of sales information from distributors for print books and from eBook vendors.
  • Serve as a resource person for both the Audit and Finance Committee and Board of Directors of the Press.
  • Prepare and analyze financial aspects of publication projects; in-kind contributions to the Press; and provide an annual assessment of problems arising from print runs.

Minimum Education & Experience

Undergraduate degree

Five (5) years' experience in publishing in an administrative position, or related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of the book publishing industry.
  • Excellent knowledge of business and accounting practices, including financial budgeting, planning, and analysis as they relate specifically to the editorial, marketing, and production department functions of publishing.
  • Strong technical skills including knowledge of spreadsheet applications, accounting software, and databases.
  • Proven managerial ability and the ability to communicate to staff and externally to various boards and committees of the parent universities (McGill and Queen’s).
  • Fluent in English.


  • CPA designation or status as a candidate for the CPA profession.
  • Experience and knowledge of database queries, including SQL queries.
  • Familiarity with book metadata/bibliographic data.
  • Spoken French.
