JOB PURPOSE:

Working in support of two acquisitions editors, the Editorial Assistant is responsible for a number of essential tasks within the contracting and manuscript development processes. This is a junior-level position, designed as an entree into scholarly publishing.

RESPONSIBILITIES*:

• Assist editors/authors in preparing and transmitting manuscripts into production

• Coordinate peer review of proposals and manuscripts

• Assist editors in tracking titles under contract, maintain schedules based on communication with authors/editors

• Oversee the permissions process

• Create and distribute publication agreements

• Work with editors to compile data and prepare documents for editorial board meetings

• Perform office duties including, but not limited to, handling incoming and outgoing mail, entering data into basic reports, making copies

• Arrange meetings, including scheduling rooms, managing equipment, and assembling materials

• Create and maintain files and filing systems

• Liaise with marketing, production, and finance departments

*Other duties may also be assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Four-year college degree or equivalent

• Basic computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software and email applications

• Ability to complete assigned tasks, to prioritize and meet deadlines in a busy work environment

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

• Ability to work cooperatively and maintain productive work relationships

• Academically engaged and curious, regardless of main field of study

• Some understanding of fundamental aspects of the book acquisitions and publishing processes
