Duke University Press is seeking a Marketing & Sales Specialist to assist with publicity and direct marketing efforts, by implementing and executing marketing programs and activities.  The successful candidate will be a clear communicator, will possess a positive attitude, and will demonstrate keen attention to detail.

Job Responsibilities

I. Publicity and Direct Marketing

  • Assist in the implementation of marketing programs and activities
  • Create content for social media publicity efforts and blog posts as needed
  • Coordinate various publicity activities such as preparing review lists and overseeing distribution of review copies
  • Write and prepare copy for catalogs, web, and other marketing efforts
  • Proof subscription renewals

II. Exhibit Program

  • Coordinate arrangements for events such as receptions, displays, and conferences as needed
  • Oversee logistics for select conferences, managing reservations, processing payments for exhibits (booths, furniture, electricity, etc.), and packing and preparing shipments

III. Advertising Program

  • Manage and expand advertising program for 50+ journals; maintain relationships with external advertisers
  • Oversee revenue for advertising program; project ad revenue, analyze trends, and prepare quarterly revenue reports; meet annual advertising budget goal
  • Recommend advertising rates for Duke Press journals; distribute media kits to potential advertisers

IV. Collection Sales Support

  • Carry out data preparation, market research, and prospecting for new product development and sales efforts
  • Support product marketing strategy by scheduling meetings, managing task lists, and conducting research (for 10+ electronic collections)
  • Compilation of sales materials for agents and sales meetings

V. Reporting

  • Prepare 40+ annual marketing reports for Journals Director, gathering information from the Journals Marketing team and ensuring accuracy and branded presentation
  • Report generation, accuracy checking, and delivery of Library Relations reports

VI. Budget

  • Provide assistance with work team expenses
  • Serve as team’s point person for complex accounting procedures, processing wire transfers and accounts payable check requests

VII. Indexing Program

  • Manage abstracting/indexing program for journals, ensuring that they appear in the correct bibliographic databases
  • Liaise with external indexing vendors, managing application process and setting up their access to journals
  • Provide indexing updates to Journals Director

VIII. Distributor Sales

  • Establish and maintain distributor relationships for journals
  • Oversee bookstore distribution for select journals
  • Liaise with distributors and receive updated quantities for journal print runs
  • Serve as liaison to Customer Relations team

IX. Other General Duties

  • Serve as manager for special projects as needed (e.g. journals catalog process, award applications, etc.)
  • Update and maintain departmental databases
  • Various research projects and quality control
  • Provide feedback on team members’ work; participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions
  • Travel to academic and professional conferences as needed
  • Serve on committees as needed

Education/ Experience

Work requires a background in marketing or promotions normally acquired through two years of post-secondary education, concentrating on marketing or sales.  OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Required Skills

Excel proficiency, database/data entry experience, project management, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to balance priorities, multitasking, social media, requires lifting up to 30 pounds.
