UBC Press, the largest scholarly press in western Canada, is seeking an experienced production/editorial editor. The successful candidate will coordinate the production of assigned book projects, from approved manuscript to final printed book and e-book, and perform assigned administrative tasks related to the overall goals of the department.

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the tasks of copy-editing, proofreading, indexing, design, typesetting, coding, and printing for assigned book projects.
  • Oversees the work of suppliers, including freelance copy editors, proof-readers, technical artists, indexers, designers, typesetters, printers, interns, and occasional student support staff.
  • Sets and monitors production schedules.
  • Handles and checks various stages of page proofs.
  • Performs copy-editing and proof-reading tasks on book projects.
  • Writes and coordinates the production of promotional copy for books (including the cover, catalogues, ads, website, and for metadata).
  • Assesses illustrative materials and checking permissions.
  • Liaises with printer re printing, scheduling, and shipping of books.


  • Undergraduate or graduate degree.
  • Two years’ publishing experience, preferably with a scholarly press.
  • Demonstrated editing, proofreading, and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; time management and negotiating abilities; and the capacity to work as a member of a publishing team.
  • Good computer skills, including Word, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, and some familiarity with HTML/CSS coding.
