The Product Manager for Publishing Information Systems at Duke University Press (DUP) is responsible developing internal publishing information systems used by Duke Press to support the production, storage, organization, and dissemination of product and content data, in order to meet the Press’s business goals.  Primary duties include managing the creation and maintenance of publishing information systems; partnering with stakeholders to evaluate and re-engineer processes that are supported by these systems; determining system requirements; and delivering product value to DUP’s internal customers and stakeholders.

Specific Responsibilities:  Lead strategic planning as well as execution & coordination for enterprise systems. Lead project teams and stakeholders to actionable decisions about the systems.  Deliver functionality that best serves the Press’s overall objectives, balancing the interests of stakeholders, the Press’s business goals, and the system’s technical capabilities and limitations to deliver greatest functionality.

Work with internal stakeholders and end-users to define business requirements for the system(s) and translate these into functional requirements.  When customer requirements are not feasible given available technology or funding, work with internal stakeholders to re-engineer existing practices, refine requirements, and/or explore alternative approaches. Recommend business process changes where necessary, in order to model best practices or to reduce system complexity and ensure sustainability.

Propose and manage budgets for the creation, maintenance and upgrading of DUP’s internal publishing information systems.  Create project teams to build and deploy the system(s). Manage in a flexible and dynamic way the balance of project scope, budget, and schedule to deliver business value in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manage stakeholder expectations to meet budgetary and schedule goals. Manage the acquisition, specifications, and deployment of new publishing information systems.  Track system effectiveness and functionality in support of the DUP’s overall business objectives and operational strategy. After systems are deployed, provide leadership within the organization to ensure consolidated, Press-wide management of the system.

Manage required vendor relationships to ensure smooth & uninterrupted operation of DUP’s publishing information systems. Serve as principal liaison between internal stakeholders & end-users, and the technical experts & vendors who develop or support the Press’s internal publishing systems.  Provide systems training to Duke Press end-users and stakeholders. Resolve user-reported problems, involving as necessary DUP I.T. staff or external vendor support. Ensure that interfaces with other systems, both internal and external, are developed and continuously maintained.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described above.

Required Skills:

  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with a commitment to proactive communication to and cultivation of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to lead effectively through influence.
  • Knowledge of a variety of project management methodologies and tools. Experience with agile approaches to software development and project management are a plus.
  • Experience managing and building software solutions. Experience with publishing systems are a plus.
  • Understanding of the technical architecture of database-driven and web interface software systems.
  • Strong negotiation skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with an order, inventory, or fulfillment system
  • SQL skills
  • Crystal Reports proficiency

Education/Training:  Work requires either a Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to information technology or business analysis, OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Experience:  Two years of experience as a business analyst, a requirements analyst, or a publishing systems project manager.  IT-related experience strongly preferred.
