Publishing Technology Specialist

Description

The Publishing Technology Specialist provides technical support for all stages of the journal publishing process, including editorial office operations, copy editing, production, posting, quality control, and reporting. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of scholarly publishing, a demonstrated ability to learn and apply new technologies, excellent communication skills, and a knack for finding solutions to new problems.

The position is based on the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Support journal office use of Aries Systems’ Editorial Manager for peer review: analyze office workflows, implement Editorial Manager in journal offices, train journal staff, provide front-line tech support, beta-test upcoming versions of the software.
  • Support copy editing: install and support XML-based editing software (Arbortext Editor), learn XML markup for journal articles (JATS).
  • Support production: troubleshoot technical processes involving Unix command-line tools and web-based databases; support posting journal content to the division’s online publishing platform (Atypon’s Literatum).
  • Acquire markup, file conversion, programming, and other skills as necessary to develop and support new or enhanced workflows and tools.
  • Collaborate with technical and non-technical staff to assess new technologies and integrate them into the publishing process.

  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emails and queries required.
  • Ability to work on collaborative projects as well as independently required.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines required.
