Cornell University Press, est. 1869, located in Ithaca, New York, publishes over 170 titles a year in many disciplines, including anthropology, Asian studies, classics, cultural studies, history, literary criticism and theory, medieval studies, New York City and State, philosophy, politics and international relations, security studies, Slavic and Eurasian studies, sociology, and urban studies. Our books in the life sciences and natural history, including field guides, are published under the Comstock Publishing Associates imprint, and a distinguished list of books in labor and employment relations, the health care professions, and human resources is offered under our ILR Press imprint.

This part-time production editor is responsible for managing efficiently the production of between 13 and 18 projects from manuscript to bound book or ebook, by coordinating the involvement of authors, freelance copyeditors and indexers, book packagers, production staff, and acquisitions editors. The editor analyzes manuscripts for editorial needs and the quality of editing and communicates with freelancers, packagers, and authors to resolve issues; prepares final manuscripts for composition; reviews proof and resolves problems with author and production department as necessary, minimizing alterations and upholding editorial standards; and maintains schedules to ensure that publication dates are met.

The position requires frequent professional communication with other press staff, authors, and vendors on the phone, in writing, and in person and the ability to work cooperatively to solve problems. Other duties as assigned include attending meetings and maintaining project data in the press’s title management system.

This is an onsite, part-time, 20 hours per week, term position approved for two years.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with 1–2 years of book publishing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent editorial, proofreading, and project management skills. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple priorities. Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively with colleagues in a team-oriented setting. Experience editing electronically in Microsoft Word. Strong working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style. ​

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference is given to those with prior publishing experience of at least three years. Knowledge of FileMaker Pro and Adobe Acrobat a plus.  Experience in an academic environment helpful.  ​
