Associate Publicist


Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks an Associate Publicist to join PUP’s marketing team to orchestrate, execute, and follow through on a wide variety of tasks associated with media, influencer, and journal outreach for scholarly and trade books, as assigned on a seasonal basis. As a team member of the Promotions department, the Associate Publicist is expected to handle publicity for a variety of titles and will pitch and present lists to media, influencers, and journal editors, to participate in in house meetings, and to maintain a positive relationship with authors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Handles the publicity campaign for select trade and academic trade titles, in order to promote the sale of these books and with an eye to maintaining positive author relations. This typically involves:

- Identifying the audience for assigned books and pitching the appropriate media outlets and influencers.

- Researching, composing and developing media, influencer, and journal lists for assigned titles.

- Researching and writing press materials and other publicity materials as needed.

- Arranging interviews and feature articles.

- Organizing and booking author events, signings and lectures as needed.

- Soliciting and assisting in placement of excerpts, op-eds, and by-lined articles and posts by authors.

- Monitoring and circulating media hits for assigned titles.

- Communicating ideas for social media promotion to the Social Media Manager and ideas for PUP blog posts to the Curator of Ideas and Content Partnerships.

  • Oversees journal, media, and influencer outreach and mailings for monograph titles. As appropriate and in discussion with manager, works with monograph authors directly to pursue opportunities for op-eds and interviews.
  • Attends select academic conferences and media meetings and represents publisher at select industry events.
  • Works closely with editorial, sales and marketing departments to ensure good communication between authors and PUP staff, including participating in weekly Launch Meetings and Sales Conference and attending weekly Project Review meetings.
  • Chairs select author publicity calls, as discussed with manager.
  • Assists in general maintenance of departmental database, maintains updated media and journal contacts, and initiates new media and journal ties associated with assigned campaigns to ensure database is current.
  • Serves as a resource to Publicity Assistant and intern, providing guidance when needed.


  • 2 years prior book publicity or marketing experience.
  • Must possess superior writing skills and close attention to detail and be able to thrive in a collaborative environment.
  • Must possess superior interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with individuals at all levels (authors, editors, bookstores, other staff members).
  • Must have some familiarity with using social media platforms for research.
  • Must have familiarity with major media outlets and timelines.
  • Previous experience coordinating author events is preferred.
  • Previous experience with Cision or another media database is preferred.
