I.  Perform a full range of duties involved in editing & proofreading of journals and other printed materials submitted for publication

 

II.  Manage editorial processes of the journal

A.     Evaluate manuscripts that are accepted for publication; determine level of editing required to maintain high standards and assess areas of manuscripts that require special focus

B.      Copyedit manuscripts, improving comprehensibility of prose, correcting technical errors, and imposing style guide; for areas not covered in style guide and for solving complicated editorial issues, review style manuals and independently choose best course of action

C.      Advise academic editor(s) about best editorial practices and approaches

D.     Update and maintain style guide for journal

E.      Oversee freelance copyeditors; independently provide instructions for improving comprehensibility of prose, correcting technical errors, and imposing style guide; review and critique work of freelance editors; for areas not covered in style guide and for solving complicated editorial issues, review style manuals and independently choose best course of action

F.      Correspond with authors and academic editor(s), as needed, to explain editorial approach and decisions on manuscripts as well as to ask or to respond to question

G.     Review corrections by authors and academic editor(s) to manuscripts and proofs; adjudicate differences, deciding which changes are preferable and negotiating with parties as needed

H.     Proofread and perform quality check of proofs

I.       Oversee freelance proofreaders. Independently provide instructions for proofreading typeset material. Review and critique work of freelance proofreaders

J.       Oversee editorial assistant’s copyediting and proofreading work; review and critique work of editorial assistant; balance editorial standards with schedules, deciding when work on an editorial stage has achieved an acceptable level of quality and outstanding problems have been sufficiently resolved and then releasing the issue to the next stage in the production process to meet publication dates

K.      Collaborate with production staff on solving scheduling issues and the presentation of complex textual and visual materials in the journal

L.      Implement and utilize new software tools to create workflow efficiencies, especially for digital publishing

M.    Manage editorial logistics for multiple projects and priorities; develop and oversee procedures, methodologies, and internal schedules for project management; track all of the components of issues (manuscripts, art, permissions, publication agreements, etc.), ensuring that deadlines are met, and manage page allotments for journal volumes

 

III.  Manage administrative activities of the journal

A.     Supervise and train editorial assistant and student workers as needed

B.      Manage peer-review process for journal, using online or other peer-review system; train academic editor(s), editorial board members, and editorial assistant in the use of the system; analyze acceptance rate; advise academic editor(s) about the flow of accepted articles as well as the system’s details and capabilities

C.      Communicate with academic editor(s) regarding the election of board members and annual Foerster Prize selection process

D.     Advise authors and academic editor(s) about rights and permissions issues, including requirements for digital rights; review permissions documentation to ensure that the rights and permissions granted are acceptable for the Press’s publishing practices

E.      Prepare regular editorial reports for distribution to academic editor(s) and staff at the Press, providing information on the progress of articles and issues in process; detail areas of concern; analyze trends in article submissions

F.      Collaborate with academic editor(s) and marketing department on developing ideas and strategy for promoting special issues

 

IV.  Additional duties

A.     Work on professional development goals to improve skills

B.      Complete special projects to create efficiencies, solve problems, etc.

C.      Attend professional conferences and participate in meetings at the Press to improve understanding of scholarly publishing and the Press's operations as well as to share information; make presentations and write blog postings as requested

 

D.     Other related duties as assigned

 

Duke University Press is seeking a Managing Editor for the journal American Literature in its Journals Publishing and Partnership Group.  The Managing Editor of American Literature oversees the editorial processes for the journal, ensuring the editorial quality of issues and balancing this objective with schedules. The individual manages the peer-review process for articles. The Managing Editor has solid editorial experience and excellent project management skills; demonstrates the ability to make decisions and solve problems independently; and shows a commitment to continuous learning.

 

This position is full-time, paid on an hourly basis and is eligible for full Duke University benefits.
