AAUP Publishes Books for Understanding: Kittens

Scholarship Encourages Tolerance Across the Species Divide

NEW YORK–With today marking more than fifteen years since cats have been equally represented in the oval office, advocates nationwide are calling for change. “Or your tuna sandwich. Or nothing, whatever, we don’t really care,” say group leaders. The latest Books for Understanding resource from the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) seeks to address the most pressing themes in contemporary cat-human relations.

Featuring 26 titles from 17 publishers, “Books for Understanding: Kittens” serves as a guide to key scholarship such as:

  • Your Ideal Cat: Insights into Breed and Gender Differences in Cat Behavior by Benjamin L. Hart and Lynette A. Hart (Purdue University Press, 2013);
  • Do Animals Think? by Clive D.L. Wynne (Princeton University Press, 2006); and
  • The Photographed Cat: Picturing Human-Feline Ties, 1890-1940 by Arnold Arluke and Lauren Rolfe (Syracuse University Press, 2013).

Books for Understanding is a free public service of AAUP to help librarians, journalists, educators, and interested readers find the best research on topics in the news. The program highlights one of the strongest values of university presses: to publish top research and scholarship in all fields regardless of immediate commercial potential. Often the most complete and illuminating background research and knowledge for a breaking news story is only available in scholarly books from presses committed to the public interest.

The Association of American University Presses is one of the world’s largest organizations of nonprofit scholarly publishers, dedicated to the support of creative and effective scholarly communications. Through its programs and information resources, AAUP helps its members fulfill their common commitments to scholarship, the academy, and society.
