Librarians Recognize Excellence in University Press Books

“Best of the Best” Showcased at 2011 ALA

NEW YORK, NY—The 21st edition of University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is now available online at www.aaupnet.org/librarybooks.

A popular and trusted acquisitions resource, the university press bibliography is the product of a longstanding and successful collaboration between the Association of American University Presses (AAUP), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the Public Library Association (PLA).

School and public librarians have selected, reviewed, and rated more than 350 books published by members of the AAUP. Featuring subjects as diverse as Ancient Egypt, contemporary Islam, culinary history, social media, civil rights, and conservation, published in formats from e-book to glossy photographs, the bibliography provides librarians with valuable scholarship to match any interest.

To launch the new edition of the bibliography, a special program, “The Best of the Best from University Presses: Books You Should Know About” will be held at this year’s American Library Association summer meeting on June 26 in New Orleans. C-Span’s BookTV will be present to record the program.

At the session, five librarians from AASL and PLA selection committees will present sixteen of their favorite titles from the bibliography to encourage use of the bibliography in collection planning. This year’s panelists are Hilary Albert, Mahopac Public Library, Mahopac, NY; Jo Ann Carr, University of Wisconsin-Madison MERIT Library, Madison, WI; Nann Blaine Hilyard, Zion-Benton Public Library, Zion, IL; Teri Maggio, Assumption Parish Library, Napoleonville, LA; and Judi Repman, Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA.

A complete list of titles to be featured on June 26 is available online at http://aaupnet.org/news-a-publications/aaup-publications/university-press-books-for-libraries/484.
