Producer and MacArthur Fellow to Deliver Opening Talk at the 2011 AAUP Annual Meeting in Baltimore
Author, screenwriter, and producer David Simon will deliver the opening address at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) Thursday, June 2, at the Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore.
Best-known for his work on the acclaimed television series “The Wire” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” Simon was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2010. The Foundation’s website describes Simon’s work as “richly textured narratives that probe urban America’s most complex and poorly understood realities.”
Simon is co-creator of the HBO series “Treme,” a drama about rebuilding post-Katrina New Orleans, and he served as a writer and executive producer of HBO’s “Generation Kill,” a miniseries depicting U.S. Marines in the early days of the Iraq conflict. The former Baltimore Sun reporter also writes for The New Yorker, Esquire, and the Washington Post.
“David Simon is an astonishingly creative observer of American culture and the human condition, and we are both delighted and honored to have him join us at our annual meeting,” said Richard Brown, president of the AAUP. “Great publishing begins with great writing, and I can think of no more appropriate figure than David to kick off our conversations about the future of our industry.” The AAUP Meeting is an annual gathering of publishing and scholarly communications professionals. The program of AAUP 2011 will be organized around the theme: “The Next Wave: Toward a Culture of Collaboration.”
