The Democratization of Technology in Education
Simon Ryan, Business Development—Europe and Latin America, Compro Technologies
Ravin Minocha, Vice President of Engineering, Compro Technologies
The democratization of technology in education has led to a leveling of the playing field. What was once in the hands of the few is now available to many—the barriers of financial muscle and human resources have waned thus allowing smaller players (and different players) to adopt roles that yesteryear were unimaginable and unattainable to all except the very large university presses and large publishing houses. Therefore, university presses should reevaluate what technologies, and therefore strategies, are open to them moving forward. This conversational presentation between Simon Ryan and Ravin Minocha will increase the awareness of the possibilities that the available modern technologies can afford in educational sectors and specifically in Higher Ed.

How to Make Your Open Access Books More Discoverable
Niels Stern, Director, OAPEN Foundation
This presentation will explain how to increase discoverability and usage of your Open Access (OA) peer reviewed books using the OAPEN publication platform and the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). These open infrastructures dedicated to OA books connect publishers with academic libraries and readers all over the world. From the presentation the key takeaways will be a clear understanding of (1) how you can have your academic books distributed through OAPEN and DOAB, (2) how the infrastructures work, and (3) the suite of services that we offer to publishers.

PageMajik & University of Michigan Press: A Case Study and Vision for the Future
Steve Rutberg, Director of Sales, PageMajik
PageMajik and University of Michigan Press have been partnering for 1.5 years now to acknowledge and alleviate several editorial pain points that are all too common across many university presses.
The presentation will kick off with Elizabeth Demers, Editorial Director at University of Michigan Press. Demers will share a “big picture” vision for what they hope to accomplish by implementing a new editorial management system that 1) puts the author experience first by streamlining the final manuscript submission process; 2) creates clearer communication (and cleaner manuscripts) in the acquisitions handoff to production; and 3) gives us the opportunity to identify chapter-level and image metadata at an earlier stage streamlining our ebook production and marketing processes.
Also, Anna Pohlod, Editorial Associate and Acquisitions Coordinator at University of Michigan Press, will discuss some specific pain points in Michigan’s manuscript transmittal process that were identified at the beginning of the project with PageMajik, how the Press is working with PageMajik to alleviate these, and what the impact is on the various stakeholders—authors, editors, project managers, and ebook managers. Pohlod will address how Michigan is using PageMajik to capture image metadata, centralize final manuscript submission, implement file version control, and eliminate manual tasks such as formatting manuscripts and creating accurate castoffs.
The session will wrap up with some time for a brief Q&A.

Workflow Considerations for Accessible ePubs
Hugh Shiebler, Director of Client Solutions, WPS
In this brief presentation, Westchester Publishing Services will explain the reasons driving many university presses to improve the accessibility of their digital content, and talk about how accessible content is consumed through assistive technology. They will share best practices for creating accessible ePub files not just as a final deliverable in your production workflow, but also talk about practices upstream in acquisitions and the editorial cycle to help ensure your content is accessible to all readers.

Using Data to Support University Presses and Create Sustainable OA Publishing Models
Justin Spence, PSI
The long-term sustainability of open access book and journal publishing is currently the holy grail being sought by publishers across the globe. There are many ways that data can be used to help achieve this. Using its comprehensive information about institutional identity and the geographical location of individuals, PSI/The IP Registry is piloting a unique dashboard service to help publishers work out where their ebooks and journals are being most used. The dashboard allows rich stories of impact to be compiled as well as highlighting institutions that are benefitting from publisher titles but may not be contributing to their sustainability. After working with Annual Reviews to successfully launch their Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) business model, PSI is working with university presses like the University of Michigan Press to provide access to data that will help University of Michigan Press to understand their readership, and monitor changes, while also being able to report important information to funders, authors and other stakeholders. This will help them to grow and evolve their OA publishing program for a successful future.
