Audiobook and podcast publishing is an increasingly critical component of a publisher’s strategy. Book publishing audio sales have grown by double digits since 2012 and APA members reached $1.6 billion in sales in 2021; digital audio accounted for 12.6% of adult sales in 2022. In the past, publishers traditionally licensed audio content, but recently many publishers have developed their own audio imprints and sales strategies. Podcasting and podcast listening continues to rise as well; 38 percent of U.S. adults listened to a podcast within the last month, according to a 2022 survey; popular podcasts achieve millions of unique streams and downloads per month.
In this Publishing CareerBuilder, Michele Cobb, Executive Director of both the Audio Publishers Association and The Podcast Academy, and Emily Everhart, who leads audio and podcast efforts at Disney Publishing Worldwide, will discuss current and emerging trends in audiobook and podcast publishing, skills and experience needed to enter the field, and strategies for getting started in the audio and podcast publishing market.
