Committee Service

Nomination Process

Staff at all member presses are encouraged to nominate themselves to serve on a committee. Committee nominations open in early spring each year, and the new committee “term-year” begins July 1. The incoming AUPresses President and the Executive Director appoint committee chairs in the late spring; these incoming chairs are provided with the number of committee openings that may need to be filled and all relevant nominations. Final committee rosters are subject to approval by the AUPresses President and Executive Director.

Staff at all member presses are eligible to serve on most Committees of the Association and Task Forces, but only staff from regular member presses are eligible to serve as committee chairs. Membership on Committees of the Board (Nominating, Audit, and Admissions and Standards) is limited to staff at regular member presses.

Volunteers must have the approval of their supervisor and/or press director before serving on an AUPresses Committee.

Time Commitment and Financial Considerations

Service on committees may require between 2 and 20 hours of service per month (exclusive of any travel to conference or meetings). There are no out-of-pocket expenses, but committee members are strongly encouraged to attend the AUPresses Annual Meeting. Travel costs and registration fees to the annual meeting are the responsibility of the member presses.

If you have questions about the workload, please contact the current Committee Chair or the Committee’s Staff Liaison.

Service Terms

Except for the Annual Meeting Program Committee, the University Press Week Task Force, the Investment Committee, and Committees of the Board, committee members generally serve three-year terms. Chairs are appointed for one year, usually as part of a three-year term of service, and may not succeed themselves in office.

Most AUPresses committees shall have no fewer than five and no more than nine members. Committee rosters should reflect the diversity of our membership community.

Members can find more information about committee service policies in the Policies and Procedures Handbook.

Committee Charges

All current committee and task force charges are available online. Please note that charges change annually based on the needs of the Association and advice of the committees and Board of Directors; new charges and rosters for the current term are generally posted in late summer.
