Charge
General Objective:
Conduct a comprehensive review of the Association’s current dues structure, taking into consideration issues of global equity, relative value for money to different membership categories, the need for revenue neutrality, possible alternative sources of dues revenue including but not limited to potential new organizational membership categories, governance implications, and other material considerations that arise as the task force executes its charge; report back to the board, including any potential recommendations for change, in time for its June 2026 meeting.
Specific Charges to the Generative AI Task Force:
- Familiarize yourselves with the final report of the 2016 Structure Task Force and the 2017 Association Brand Strategy report
- Conduct an environmental scan of the dues structure(s) of benchmarkable organizations
- Investigate the feasibility of employing global equity mechanisms (including but not limited to the Purchasing Power Parity calculator, cOAlition S’s global equity pricing model, and the Research4Life model)
- Consider whether the Association might, consistent with our Mission and Core Values, develop eligibility criteria and establish one or more new membership categories designed to embrace “fellow travelers”, including but not limited to museum publishers, learned society publishers, and historical society presses (who do not qualify for membership currently), and/or small commercial scholarly HSS publishers; account for increased central office costs in your analysis
- Model the potential revenue impact of any proposed changes
- Identify governance issues (Bylaws, Membership Guidelines, Policies & Procedures) to be addressed as a result or implementing any proposed changes
- Report your findings to the board of directors in time for its June 2026 meeting
