General Objective:

  • It is an underacknowledged fact that, following a period of rapid expansion, the Global South now has more than three times the number of higher education institutions than the Global North. Yet in many countries a mission-centred university press landscape has not yet fully emerged or else is limited by funding, politics or available infrastructure. As a result, the fruits of Global South research are often published via large commercial publishers from Europe and the US.
  • As a genuinely international, mission-driven organisation AUPresses has explored this issue previously via a single-year pilot global partnerships programme. Building upon the lessons learnt from that experience, the Association will now establish a Taskforce to identify the appropriate models for collaboration with nascent and established university presses in the Global South.

Specific Charges to the Equity, Justice, Inclusion, & Belonging Committee:

  1. Map the university press landscape in the Global South.
  2. Assist with identifying and facilitating relationships with key strategic partners in the region – publishing associations, national libraries, national research bodies, international publishing organisations (Crossref, ORCiD etc).
  3. Consider the most equitable models for collaboration between AUPresses, its members and presses in the Global South, recognising the different contexts for the different regions of the Global South.
  4. Propose a capacity building programme for selected UPs to ensure sustainability.

Common Charges to All Committees of the Association:

  • Submit reports on Committee activities to the Association Board in time for its October, March, and June meetings. Interim reports are due on 24 October 2024, and 28 February 2025; final reports that recap all committee activities for the year and are shared with the membership are due 23 May 2025. Follow guidelines for preparing reports found in the Chair Handbook in the Committee and Task Force Chairs Group on UP Commons.
  • Follow all guidelines and requirements published in the AUPresses Chair Handbook, including those regarding the use of UP Commons, inclusion of board and staff liaisons, and any research or survey projects.
  • Appoint a member of your committee to serve as a liaison to the Equity, Justice, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee. This role provides updates on your committee’s efforts in support of equity and inclusion, seeks information, support, or guidance on EJIB matters as needed, and attends a Fall meeting for liaisons hosted by EJIB Committee.
  • Review your General Objective and Specific Tasks at the end of the service year and recommend changes for next year to the Executive Director.

Als internationale Gemeinschaft unterstuetzen wir die wichtige Rolle von Verlegern, dessen Aufgabe es ist akademische Exzellenz und Forschung zu foerdern.
