- The Library of Congress Publishing Office creates books and related products that showcase the collections, services, and scholarship of the world’s largest library. This work helps the Library fulfill its mission to inform, inspire, and engage the public by bringing the treasures of its unparalleled collections—including those too fragile or rare for public display—to readers around the world. Publications include institutional publications and series, including guides and scholarly interpretations of holdings and collections, as well as books for general readers, including companion volumes to exhibitions and works on the Library’s history, art and architecture. Our books cover a broad range of topics, including American history, architecture, photography, poetry, children's literature, sports, folklife, and the early Americas.
Central to our success is a cooperative publishing program through which we partner with a number of trade and scholarly presses to share risk and leverage respective strengths. The Publishing Office works with curators, subject specialists, and other scholars to develop ideas for new projects and proposals for consideration by potential co-publishers. Our editorial team works closely with authors to facilitate the completion of top-quality work, handling such responsibilities as developmental editing, fact checking, obtaining and organizing high-resolution images and permissions, indexing, and copy editing. We also work with the Library’s communications office and the Library Shop to amplify the outreach and marketing efforts of our co-publishing partners.
