AAUP Opens Washington DC Office

Washington, DC— The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) is very pleased to announce the opening of its first Washington, DC, office. The Association is undertaking this expanded presence in order to further its strategic goals of advocacy and collaboration with stakeholders in higher education, copyright, freedom of expression, scholarly communications, the humanities, and global policy.

Peter Berkery, AAUP Executive Director, will be the Association’s main representative in Washington, and will divide his time between DC, New York City, and a regular travel schedule.

“AAUP has long been headquartered in New York City, the epicenter of North American publishing. But our membership’s interests extend more broadly into scholarly communications, global higher education policies, and to the humanities and technology issues,” says Berkery. “Plus, the city of Washington is home to a surprising array of scholarly publishers—with ten AAUP member presses here, it is a vibrant center of mission-driven publishing.”

AAUP is grateful to the Brookings Institution Press (founded 1916, AAUP member since 1958) for generously providing the Association’s first home in the US capital. As the university press community gears up to celebrate University Press Week 2015 (November 8-14), this is an exciting new chapter in the history of the Association.
