AAUP Publishes Books for Understanding: Brazil

Scholarship Illuminates the Society, History, and Culture of World Cup Host

NEW YORK, NY–The World Cup kicks off in Rio de Janeiro this week, where preparations are also well underway for the 2016 Summer Olympics. As sports focus international attention on Brazil, media coverage has expanded to cover the nation’s growing economy, social tensions, and political unrest. The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) has compiled its latest Books for Understanding bibliography as a guide to the wide range of serious scholarship on this diverse, complex country.

Featuring nearly 200 works from 28 scholarly publishers, “Books for Understanding: Brazil” includes titles such as:

  • Temples of the Earthbound Gods: Stadiums in the Cultural Landscapes of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires by Christopher Thomas Gaffney (University of Texas Press, 2008);
  • Hard Times in the Marvelous City: From Dictatorship to Democracy in the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro by Bryan McCann (Duke University Press, 2014);
  • Race and Multiraciality in Brazil and the United States: Converging Paths? by G. Reginald Daniel (Penn State University Press, 2006); and
  • Working Portuguese for Beginners by Monica Rector, Regina Santos, and Marcelo Amorim (Georgetown University Press, 2010).

Books for Understanding is a free public service of AAUP to help librarians, journalists, educators, and interested readers find the best research on topics in the news. The program highlights one of the strongest values of university presses: to publish top research and scholarship in all fields regardless of immediate commercial potential. Often the most complete and illuminating background research and knowledge for a breaking news story is only available in scholarly books from presses committed to the public interest.

The Association of American University Presses is one of the world’s largest organizations of nonprofit scholarly publishers, dedicated to the support of creative and effective scholarly communications. Through its programs and information resources, AAUP helps its members fulfill their common commitments to scholarship, the academy, and society.
