AAUP Publishes Books for Understanding: JFK

Scholarly Titles Reexamine the Life and Legacy of the 35th President

NEW YORK–Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of President John F. Kennedy, assassinated less than three years into his term, on November 22, 1963. Despite its tragic brevity, the Kennedy presidency is inseparable from many of the most momentous events of late-20th century America: the civil rights movement, the development of communist Cuba, the beginnings of the Cold War, and the space race. In honor of the young president’s memory, AAUP has assembled a “Books for Understanding: JFK” resource as a guide to the latest university press scholarship illuminating his life and career.

The Books for Understanding bibliography includes more than 50 works of scholarly insight into Kennedy’s presidency, life, death, and legacy. Encompassing works from 26 AAUP member presses, “Books for Understanding: JFK” forms an easily accessible resource for armchair historians and professional scholars alike, featuring such titles as:

  • John F. Kennedy by Robert Dallek (Oxford University Press, 2011);
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis in American Memory: Myths versus Reality by Sheldon M. Stern (Stanford University Press, 2012); and
  • The Road to Dallas: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy by David Kaiser (Harvard University Press, 2009).

Books for Understanding is a free public service of AAUP to help librarians, journalists, educators, and interested readers find the best books on current events. The program highlights one of the highest values of university presses: to publish top research and scholarship in all fields regardless of immediate commercial potential. Often the most complete and illuminating background research and knowledge for a breaking news story is only available in scholarly books from presses committed to the public interest.

The Association of American University Presses is one of the world’s largest organizations of nonprofit scholarly publishers. AAUP is dedicated to the support of creative and effective scholarly communications. Through its programs and information resources, AAUP helps its members fulfill their common commitments to scholarship, the academy, and society.
