AAUP 2013 Convenes in Boston

700 Scholarly Publishers Meet for “Bridging Worlds” Program

The Annual Meeting Program Committee, chaired by Brian Halley (University of Massachusetts Press), chose the meeting’s theme to focus on both the central role university presses play in the scholarly community as well as the need to connect their work to that of other community members. Highlights from the program include a plenary on “Three Big Ideas in Publishing” featuring panelists from the US Register of Copyrights, the New Yorker, and the MIT Sloan School; a Boston media panel featuring editors and producers from local outlets discussing coverage of university press books; and sessions on everything from basic best practices to new challenges, including the global market, MOOC adoption, and the latest e-publishing capabilities.

While attendees will have a variety of sessions to choose from over two full days, the conference also includes a pre-meeting day of workshops for those seeking further professional development; forty-nine exhibitors of scholarly publishing services; and numerous receptions and gatherings for networking and conversation. The 2013 Book, Jacket, and Journal show kicks off its cross-country tour in Boston, honoring design and production teams whose work furthers a long tradition of excellence in book design.

The meeting will mark changes in AAUP leadership. The new AAUP President will take office at the Annual Meeting: Philip Cercone, Director of McGill-Queens University Press, will begin his one-year term and deliver his inaugural speech on June 22. Peter Dougherty, Director of Princeton University Press and outgoing president, will give his valedictory address on June 21. The Opening Reception on June 20 will serve as an endnote to Peter Givler’s tenure as Executive Director. Peter Berkery, who took over leadership of the Association in March, will address the membership on June 21.

The 2013 conference will also mark the centennial of Harvard University Press. The press was established in January 1913, with the mission “to advance knowledge.” A celebratory reception at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art will close out the meeting on June 22.

The Association of American University Presses is an organization of more than 130 non-profit scholarly publishers, dedicated to the support of creative and effective scholarly communications.
