Editorial Board Practices

AUPresses Regular Members are required to have an editorial review board that serves as a final certification of the quality of a press’s scholarly publications program. Resources for developing and managing the work of such boards are available to all members.

Survey of Editorial Board Practices

The details of editorial board composition, governance, service, and procedures can vary widely within a range of effective practice and  are often institutionally specific. The AUPresses Acquisitions Editorial Committee has surveyed presses to identify norms and best practices in this area, most recently in 2025—a survey that underlined how the pandemic years changed the procedures if not the purpose of these boards for many presses.

Sample Editorial Board Documents

From charters to handbooks, the community has shared a library of shared documents to help colleagues develop and revise their editorial board procedures and practices.
