Publications, Events to Mark University Press Week in November
New York, NY, and Washington, D.C.—The Association of University Presses (AUPresses), an organization of 160 mission-driven publishers around the world, is proud to announce more than 100 of the best books, journals, and other publications that embody the ”Speak UP” theme of this year’s University Press Week, with events happening Sunday November 12 to Saturday November 18.
Each publication was submitted by a different member of the Association, most of which are publishing companies that are associated with a university and all whose mission it is to publish works of scholarly or artistic importance that would often be overlooked by for-profit publishers.
The publications cover a wide range of subject matter, and many present thought-provoking concepts, new points of view, and ideas that advocate for social change. The topics range from activism and social justice to Black studies, the environment and climate change, business, science, history, education, gender studies, Indigenous studies, poetry and fiction, and more. See the complete list here.
For example, there is a book about how a network of Black women writers changed American culture, a book about how governments should impose regulations to reduce addiction to screen time, a book about the urgency of embracing Indigenous values, as well as books about the war in Ukraine, the use of social media in the fight for social justice, and more.
One of the books in this year’s reading list, The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhawk (Yale University Press), was recently selected by the National Book Awards for its nonfiction longlist.
“The fact that this year’s selection of publications covers such diverse topics and so many interesting new perspectives speaks to the importance of what we as university presses do every day,” says Jane Bunker, director of Cornell University Press and AUPresses president. “University presses aim to tell new stories and bring new scholarship to light, and that, in turn, can shape conversations around the world. Our publications are telling the kinds of stories that need to be told.”
This year’s featured works come from 85 publishers across the United States, seven in Canada, and four in the United Kingdom, as well as university presses in Jamaica, South Africa, Ireland, Belgium, Egypt, and Greece.
In addition to highlighting these specific publications, University Press Week, now in its 12th year, will also celebrate the many ways in which university presses are speaking up by presenting these works in an online gallery, featuring a selection of blog entries, and presenting in-person as well as virtual events. “We hope people take this opportunity to add some of these amazing university press works to their reading lists to learn about new subjects that will expand their world,” Bunker says.
