Hosted by the Acquisitions Editorial Committee
Book contracts matter greatly to authors, who invest immense time and effort into shaping their manuscripts and seek to both protect their work and their intellectual property in the publishing process. Contracts are also critical tools for publishers, who will use these contracts to acquire new projects and to manage the publication workflow, from grant of rights to royalty payments.
Most publishers have standard contracts that they offer to authors, but will often face author and agent questions and requests for changes to royalties, copyright, subsidiary rights, liability clauses, and other aspects of the agreement. In this hangout, acquisitions editors will discuss how best to address author and expectations in the contract negotiation process, elaborate on what information may or may not be suitable to share in negotiations, and how to continue the conversation when issues arise. The panel will conclude with questions from attendees.
