Annual University Press Award Honors Staff from Johns Hopkins and North Carolina
Washington, DC—The AAUP Constituency Award was once again presented to multiple member staff this year, honoring North Carolina’s Kathleen Ketterman and Johns Hopkins’s Anita Walker Scott. The annual award, presented at the Annual Meeting in Washington, recognizes active leadership and service to the association and the university press community.
Ketterman, Assistant Director and Marketing Manager at the University of North Carolina Press, has split her 26 years in scholarly publishing between there and Indiana University Press. During that time, she has volunteered on the Board of Directors and a variety of committees (Annual Meeting, Marketing, International Marketing, Education and Training, and Nominating), as well as two task forces. Beyond AAUP, Ketterman has served as President and Treasurer for Women in Scholarly Publishing and done substantial work for library-press relations.
“Even for those of us who’ve been in the business a very long time, Kathy is the first colleague we think of to turn to for marketing advice or reactions to new trends in our profession,” say her colleagues. “[She] has impressed us with her wisdom, leadership, and dedication to her chosen profession.”
Walker has only just retired from long career as Design and Production Manager—most recently at Johns Hopkins University Press, and previously at Stanford and New England. Walker leaves behind a legacy that includes chairing the Book, Jacket, and Journal Show (and designing its catalog), leading workshops and Annual Meeting sessions, and serving on several committees.
One colleague writes that “in the more than thirty years I have been a member of AAUP, I have not known anyone more willing to further the aims of the AAUP, to train young designers, and to assist publishing colleagues than Anita.”
