AUPresses Hangout: Permission Basics for Press Staff Working With Authors

Hosted by the Professional Development Committee and the Intellectual Property & Copyright Committee

Most university press contracts have language stipulating that an author’s work does not infringe the copyright of any person or third party. That means that the author must obtain permission for any text or images are protected by copyright. Usually the business of overseeing authors’ permissions falls to press staff. But what if you’re new to the process or maybe don’t do it that often? Or both? Join AUPresses-member experts as they explain how to navigate the complex world of permissions. We’ll pitch questions to the panelists and afterward allow you to ask questions of your own. You’ll emerge more confident about an area of publishing that can be mystifying and even scary, and your authors will thank you!

Moderators:
Rebecca Carhart, Associate Academic Editor at InterVarsity Press, Professional Development Committee
Joyce Harrison, Editor in Chief at University Press of Kansas, Intellectual Property and Copyright Committee

Panelists:
Angelica Lopez-Torres, International Rights Manager at the University of Texas Press; Elisabeth Maselli, senior acquisitions editor at the University of Pennsylvania Press; Jenny Keegan, trade editor for LSU Press.
