Assesses Progress and Perceptions of Equity in Scholarly Publishing
The Coalition for Diversity and Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC) has released the Executive Summary of the 2023 Workplace Equity (WE) in Scholarly Communications Survey.
The survey was conducted from May to July 2023, and the broad participation by university press professionals helped increase the response pool by 48% over the original 2018 WE survey. More than 1700 individuals across 7 continents took part in 2023. In tandem with the Lee & Low Diversity Baseline Survey 3.0 , which studied the demographics of the North American publishing industry, the WE Survey looked at workplace culture and representation throughout the global scholarly communications sector. The Association is pleased to have the results from both of these valuable studies available now.
The 2023 Workplace Equity executive summary pulls out four key themes:
- Employee satisfaction and recognition of employer commitments to diversity have increased since 2018.
- Not everyone experiences tangible improvements in workplace culture and workplace equity efforts.
- Key focus areas for improving equity include mentorship and networking opportunities, promotion structures and processes, and supporting employees who return from career breaks.
- Words into action: the future of workplace equity requires organizational and personal accountability.
WE Survey co-founder and co-chair Simone Taylor noted that the newly published executive summary reflected findings from initial analysis of the 2023 data, and that “we intend to do a deeper, multi-variable analysis over the next year to get a better understanding of how intersectionality affects workforce opportunities and barriers.”
AUPresses encourage members and the wider community to read the executive summary report and the accompanying data-rich Appendix.
